John Bischoff was honored by the Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce as 2018 Orrville Firefighter of the Year.  The presentation was made at the Orrville Firefighters Association annual banquet at the Orrville VFW on Friday, December 7.
Bischoff began his fire career with the Sterling Fire Department as a firefighter/EMT.  He served Sterling for eight years and reached the rank of Lieutenant.  He joined the Orrville Fire Department (OFD) in 2013.
Bischoff holds an Associate of Science in Fire Science from Keiser University.  During his five years at OFD he has advanced his training by obtaining his E.M.T. Advance, Arson Investigator 1, and Fire Safety Inspector certifications.  Bischoff is OFD’s lead in the area of Fire Prevention and Education.
In addition to responding to a high percentage of fire and E.M.S. calls, in 2018 Bischoff assisted in over 75 fire inspections, assisted in training over 1,000 Orrville Area employees in fire extinguisher safety & use, and provided fire safety education to over 800 children in area pre-schools, Orrville City Schools and Kingsway Christian School.
Bischoff is an active member of the Orrville Firefighters Association, currently serving as secretary for the organization.
The Orrville Area Chamber of Commerce established the Orrville Firefighter of the Year Award in 1977 as a means to honor one select member who has shown the highest level of service, commitment, and dedication to the department and the community throughout their career.  Orrville Fire Department members don’t do the job for money, accolades or praise, and this is not an award a member expects or works toward receiving.  It is an award that is bestowed upon you by fellow members as a result of your work ethic, ability to perform, and commitment to the department, dedication to Orrville, and service to others.  It’s the ultimate show of respect by the only group who could possibly understand what it takes to do the job.
“John’s enthusiasm, commitment, dedication and loyalty to his family, the Department, Firefighters Association and the community of Orrville  make him more than deserving of this honor, “ stated Assistant Chief Ron Ballentine, member of the selection committee.
In addition to serving as a firefighter, Bischoff is employed full time as a Structural Truss Designer for Carter Lumber.
Bischoff resides in Orrville with his wife, Heather, and their nine children, Riley, Brie, JT, Hope, Rhys, Taylor, Hunter, Leland and Jordan.
